DEAN'S CORNER - The Faces of Our HMS Community: Dimensions exhibit portraits reflect the essence of our community
February 3, 2015

The Harvard Medical School (HMS) Office for Diversity Inclusion and Community Partnership joined forces with the HMS Office of Human Resources and The Transit Gallery, to create an exhibit entitled Dimensions of Harvard Medical School.

Dimensions is a collection of photographs capturing examples of the richness and diversity inherent within the community of Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Dental Medicine faculty, administrators, staff, fellows and students.  It represents our varied cultures, ethnicities, races, genders, ages, religions, careers, education and training, socio-economic background and spiritual beliefs.

But Dimensions is more than the photographs. It is a celebration of who we are and what each of us brings to work with us each and every day.  Personal narratives written by the participants complement the photography of Jennifer Waddell and reveal the motivations and talents our colleagues draw upon to make Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Dental Medicine “work.” Many of the pictures were taken with a personal object that the individual brought with them to the photo shoot.  The object is described in the individual's statement, and tells the story about what the object means to that person.

The exhibit opened with a reception on Wednesday, January 29th, 2015 in the Waterhouse Room of The Gordon Hall of Medicine, with welcoming remarks by Jeffrey S. Flier, MD, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine; R. Bruce Donoff, DMD, MD, Dean of Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Walter C. Guralnick Distinguished Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; Joan Y. Reede, MD, MPH, MS, MBA, Dean for Diversity and Community Partnership, Associate Professor of Medicine; Julie M. Stanley, Chief Human Resources Officer; and Jennifer Waddell, Photographer.

The exhibit will remain open until April 7th, 2015 is extended to June 1st, 2015 in The Transit Gallery, Gordon Hall, 25 Shattuck Street, Boston.

"We need to give each other the space to grow, to be ourselves, to exercise our diversity.
We need to give each other space so that we may both give and receive such beautiful things as ideas, openness, dignity, joy, healing, and inclusion."
