Since July of 2011, Dr. Vivian S. Lee has served as Senior Vice President for Health Sciences at the University of Utah, Dean of the University’s School of Medicine, and CEO of University of Utah Health Care.  In this position she is responsible for an annual budget of more than $3.3 billion; a health care system comprising four hospitals; numerous clinical and research specialty centers like the Huntsman Cancer Institute and John Moran Eye Center; a network of 11 neighborhood health centers; an insurance plan; 18 regional hospital affiliates, and over 1,600  board certified physicians; and five colleges including the School of Medicine, the Colleges of Nursing, Pharmacy, Health, and most recently, the School of Dentistry.

A graduate of Harvard-Radcliffe College, Dr. Lee was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and received a doctorate in medical engineering at Oxford University.  Returning to Harvard Medical School, she earned her M.D. with honors.  She completed her residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Duke, where she also served as Chief Resident; she trained as a  fellow in Body and Cardiovascular MRI and Thoracic Imaging at NYU.  Prior to coming to Utah, she served as the inaugural Vice Dean for Science, Senior Vice-President and Chief Scientific Officer of New York University Medical Center. 

Funded by the NIH for almost 20 years, Dr. Lee was elected to National Academy of Medicine (formerly, the Institute of Medicine) and the American Society of Clinical Investigators.  She serves on the NIH Council of  Councils, the Journal Oversight Committee for JAMA and on the Scientific Advisory Board for Massachusetts General Hospital. She has chaired the Medical Imaging NIH study section and is a Fellow and past President of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM).  On the Editorial Board of leading journals in imaging, Dr. Lee has authored over 150 peer-reviewed research publications, and a popular textbook, Cardiovascular MRI: Physical Principles to Practical Protocols  (Lippincott, 2006).  She is also a director on the boards of two publicly traded companies, Merrimack Pharmaceuticals and Zions Bancorporation.
